Privacy Policy
GapScout is a Chrome Extension that helps founders, indie hackers, agencies, and SaaS builders analyse publicly visible product pages. This policy explains what data the extension touches, where it goes, and what it never does.
1. What GapScout does
- GapScout only scans a page when you click Scan Opportunity in the popup.
- It analyzes the visible text of the active tab — headings, body copy, button labels, pricing terms, social-proof terms, and visible links.
- It does not automatically scan your browsing activity, your history, your tabs, or any page you have not asked it to analyse.
- It does not read form inputs, cookies, localStorage of other sites, passwords, authentication tokens, or DOM attributes that are not visible page text.
2. Where data is stored
- In the MVP (mock mode), all analysis runs locally in your browser. No page content is sent to any GapScout server.
- Saved reports live in
chrome.storage.local. They never leave your device unless you export them yourself. - You can clear all saved reports at any time from Settings → Clear all saved reports, or by removing the extension.
3. No analytics, no sale of data
- The MVP includes no analytics, telemetry, or tracking SDKs.
- GapScout does not sell user data. In the MVP, GapScout does not transmit page content or saved reports to GapScout servers.
- If analytics are ever added in a future version, this policy will be updated and the change will be documented in the changelog.
4. Future AI proxy mode
A future version may add an optional AI proxy mode that sends the extracted visible page text to a backend service for richer analysis. If that ever ships:
- It will be off by default and require explicit user opt-in.
- Only the visible text of the page you scanned (plus minimal metadata) will be sent.
- The destination endpoint and data handling will be disclosed in this policy before the feature is enabled.
- AI proxy mode is disabled in the MVP shipped to the Chrome Web Store.
5. What you should not scan
You are responsible for what you scan. Do not use GapScout on pages containing private, confidential, personal, sensitive, financial, health, legal, or internal company data. GapScout is intended for publicly accessible product, marketing, and landing pages.
6. Legal positioning
GapScout is for public market research and opportunity analysis only. Do not copy competitor branding, code, UI, wording, private data, protected workflows, customer data, or protected IP. Build legally distinct products around underserved customer pain, missing features, and niche gaps.
7. Permissions used
- activeTab — read the current tab when you click Scan.
- scripting — inject the extraction function into the active tab on user click.
- storage — save reports locally in your browser.
No broad host permissions are requested.
